Ukrainian drone operators identified the location of the self-propelled howitzers and subsequently directed Ukrainian rocket artillery fire at them, utilizing high-explosive and cluster warheads. This successful strike marks the second instance in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war where Koksan artillery systems have been effectively neutralized. Previously, the 412th NEMESIS Regiment of the Unmanned Systems Forces achieved a similar destruction of this artillery system in the Luhansk region just one month ago.
The M1978 Koksan self-propelled howitzer, renowned for being the longest-range artillery system in the North Korean arsenal, is armed with a 170-mm gun capable of firing projectiles up to 60 kilometers. Originally designed to target Seoul from positions north of the demilitarized zone, these systems are now being deployed by the Russian Armed Forces as they attempt to recover from significant artillery losses sustained in the conflict.
As reported by Ukrinform, as of 16:00 on March 18, there had been 76 recorded combat clashes between Ukrainian defenders and Russian forces. Ongoing battles are concentrated in six operational directions, with heavy fighting reported particularly in the Kursk region.
