Kenya has issued an arrest warrant for Ibrahim Rotich, the husband of murdered athlete Agnes Tirop, after he failed to appear in court twice. Tirop was killed in 2021, sparking outrage in the athletics community. Rotich denies the charges; an arrest warrant has been issued for him to appear in court by April 8, amidst broader concerns over violence against female athletes in Kenya.

Kenya has issued a warrant for the arrest of Ibrahim Rotich, the husband of esteemed athlete Agnes Tirop, who is suspected in her murder after failing to appear in court for a second time. Tirop, known for her achievements in athletics, including multiple medals and a world record, was tragically stabbed to death at the age of 25 in October 2021, an event that drew widespread outrage within the sports community.

Ibrahim Rotich, aged 45, was called to attend a court hearing in Eldoret, located in western Kenya. However, prosecuting attorney Leonard Okaka reported that Rotich could not be located. This absence followed a previous court date where he also failed to appear. Tirop had established herself as a standout athlete, being a two-time world 10,000m bronze medallist and the 2015 world cross country champion.

Tirop’s record-breaking achievements include setting the world women-only record in the 10km road race just a month prior to her untimely death. Following the incident, Rotich denied any involvement in her murder, although Tirop’s body was discovered at her residence in Iten.

Judge Robert Wananda of Eldoret High Court has officially issued an arrest warrant, instructing the police to ensure Rotich appears in court by April 8. Previously, Rotich had been released on bail in November 2023, after spending two years in custody, with restrictions that prevented him from leaving Uasin Gishu county.

Attorney Okaka has requested that Rotich’s cash bond of 400,000 shillings (approximately $3,000) be forfeited due to his non-appearance. An additional request was made by a fellow attorney for the police to clarify Rotich’s failure to adhere to his weekly check-in at the local police station. Sadly, Kenya has seen several fatalities and violence against high-profile female athletes in recent years, including the murder of Ugandan runner Rebecca Cheptegei last year, marking a disturbing trend in the athletic community.

In summary, the Kenyan authorities have moved to arrest Ibrahim Rotich, who is under suspicion for the murder of athlete Agnes Tirop following his repeated court absences. Tirop, a celebrated athlete who achieved numerous accolades, was tragically killed in 2021. The ongoing legal proceedings highlight the concerning issue of violence against female athletes in Kenya, prompting calls for justice and action against such heinous acts.
