Authorities have confiscated the passport of the person of interest, Joshua Steven Riibe, in the case of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student missing in the Dominican Republic. Riibe, who is 22 years old from Iowa, is currently under police escort and is not permitted to leave their supervision. Konanki, a resident of Ashburn, Virginia, and an Indian citizen, was on a spring break trip with five other students to Punta Cana.

Riibe is reportedly the last individual to have seen Konanki before her disappearance in the early hours of March 6. Subsequent to her vanishing, authorities from the Dominican Republic, the United States, and India have been engaged in thorough search efforts. Riibe stated that he and Konanki were in the ocean when a wave swept them further out, but he managed to bring her back to the beach before falling asleep. Upon waking, he discovered she was missing.

Speaking to NBC News, Riibe remarked, “The ocean is a dangerous place,” emphasizing the perilous nature of the ocean conditions. Notably, he has not been charged with any wrongdoing. Investigators from the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, where Konanki’s family resides, have traveled to the Dominican Republic to address inconsistencies in Riibe’s statements from prior interviews, as stated by Sheriff Michael Chapman.

Chapman noted that some discrepancies might stem from the language barrier present during initial discussions. He assessed Riibe’s clarity in the subsequent interview, indicating that he appeared to be sincere with the detectives. These developments reflect the ongoing efforts to locate Sudiksha Konanki and gain clarity on the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
