The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has issued a global alert for Sudiksha Konanki, an Indian-origin student who has been missing in the Dominican Republic. A resident of Virginia, Ms. Konanki vanished during a spring break trip to Punta Cana. The yellow notice, which is utilized for missing persons, indicates that she was last seen on March 6.
The 20-year-old Ms. Konanki is described as approximately 1.6 meters tall, possessing black hair and brown eyes, and has three piercings in her right ear. She was reportedly on vacation with five female friends at a Punta Cana resort, where they were captured on surveillance video walking towards the beach. After her friends returned to their hotel, Ms. Konanki was later seen with Joshua Riibe, a senior at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, who has become a person of interest in the case.
Joshua Riibe has acknowledged being with Ms. Konanki when she disappeared. In a transcript acquired by NBC News, Mr. Riibe recounted their experience in waist-deep water where they were both talking and kissing. He recounted that a strong wave pulled them into the sea, asserting that he attempted to keep Ms. Konanki close while swimming to safety. Ultimately, he last observed her walking at an angle in the water before losing sight of her after he began to vomit seawater.
Mr. Riibe was later found returning to his hotel alone, which raised concerns among investigators. Sudiksha Konanki’s family has pressured authorities to widen the scope of the investigation beyond accidental drowning, suggesting abduction as a possibility. They noted the oddity of her phone and wallet being left with her friends, as she typically kept her phone on her person. Ms. Konanki currently lives with her family in Loudoun County, Virginia, and is a student of biology and chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh.
The missing case of Sudiksha Konanki continues to unfold with Interpol’s involvement, highlighting a concerning situation during a spring break trip. While Mr. Riibe has provided accounts of the events leading to her disappearance, her family insists on exploring all potential scenarios beyond accidental drowning. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities urged to pursue additional leads.
