Cyclone Jude Affects Mozambique and May Regain Strength Toward Madagascar

Cyclone Jude has impacted Mozambique, causing six fatalities and damaging 900 homes. Initially a depression, it intensified and made landfall with winds comparable to a Category 1 hurricane. Despite weakening, it may strengthen again as it approaches Madagascar. South Africa also experienced severe thunderstorms.
Cyclone Jude has struck Mozambique, disrupting daily life in the region. Initially classified as a depression on March 14 in the Indian Ocean, it intensified into a moderate tropical storm that impacted northern Madagascar shortly thereafter. Tragically, the cyclone has been linked to six deaths and the destruction of approximately 900 residences.
As Cyclone Jude continued westward across the Mozambique Channel, it strengthened into a tropical cyclone. This intensification was fueled by high sea surface temperatures near 30°C, providing adequate heat and moisture for development. Upon making landfall in Mozambique early today, the cyclone brought sustained winds of 120 km/h and gusts up to 193 km/h, reminiscent of a Category 1 hurricane.
The coastal areas of Memba, Monapo, Mossuril, Mozambique Island, and Nacala experienced over 200 mm of rainfall within 24 hours, resulting in significant flooding. Consequently, numerous flights were canceled, and approximately 40,000 residents were left without electricity.
Although Cyclone Jude has weakened, forecasts indicate a potential re-strengthening as it curves back over the Mozambique Channel, heading east toward southern Madagascar later this week. Some weather models suggest it could regain tropical cyclone status by Friday night, possibly leading to further destruction.
In a related weather event, South Africa faced severe thunderstorms on March 13, prompting a Level 6 alert in KwaZulu-Natal province due to heavy rainfall and flood risks. The storms were triggered by a cold front that lifted warm air, causing rapid condensation and resulting in around 100 mm of rain falling within a single day.
Cyclone Jude’s recent impact in Mozambique has resulted in fatalities and significant property damage. While the cyclone has weakened, it is expected to regain strength toward southern Madagascar, potentially exacerbating conditions. Concurrently, South Africa dealt with severe thunderstorms, showcasing the complex weather patterns affecting the region.
