A 46-year-old businessman, George Adu-Twum, has been accused of defrauding a police officer out of GH¢72,000 by falsely promising to secure him two auctioned vehicles. The incident reportedly occurred in 2021, and Adu-Twum pleaded not guilty to all charges during his appearance at the Circuit Court.
The trial judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, granted Adu-Twum bail amounting to GH¢75,000, conditioned upon two sureties. The case is set to resume on April 7, 2025, with the court ordering the prosecution to follow proper disclosure protocols.
According to Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori-Appiah, the complainant, whose name remains confidential, is a police officer based in Weija SCC, Accra. Adu-Twum, who claims to be a businessman residing in Weija Gbawe, was introduced to the officer through a mutual friend in relation to the vehicle procurement.
The prosecution reveals that the complainant’s family needed a Toyota Pickup and a Hyundai i30 salon car. After meeting Adu-Twum at Abelemkpe, he identified the vehicles and was pressured to make immediate payments due to competing interests. The funds were raised, with GH¢40,000 paid at Adu-Twum’s office and GH¢32,000 transferred at the complainant’s office.
Despite promising that the cars would be available within a week, Adu-Twum disappeared after receiving the funds. He was located and arrested on January 15, 2025, during which he refunded GH¢25,000 to the police officer, as noted by the prosecution during the court proceedings.
In summary, George Adu-Twum stands accused of defrauding a police officer under the pretence of facilitating the purchase of auctioned vehicles. His actions led to a significant financial loss for the complainant. The case has been scheduled for its next hearing in April 2025, while bail conditions have been set by the court.
