Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in the tragic loss of at least nine lives across Mozambique and Malawi. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported that six fatalities occurred in the provinces of Nampula and Niasa, with an additional 20 individuals injured and 9,525 displaced.
In Malawi, three deaths have been confirmed, accompanied by the displacement of approximately 20,000 residents due to severe flooding in the southern region, as reported by foreign media sources. Chiphiliro Khamula, spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, stated that evacuees are being accommodated in designated shelters.
The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique early Sunday before moving towards southern Malawi, leading to intense flooding from Monday through Wednesday. Relief efforts are currently hindered by the destruction of roads and bridges, as articulated by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Notably, in December of the previous year, Cyclone Chido affected both nations, claiming 73 lives in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
