Kamrul Islam, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi businessman, was shot dead in Wepener, South Africa, during a robbery attempt. He had been living in South Africa for twelve years and was preparing to return to Bangladesh. His family is seeking assistance to repatriate his body while grieving the loss.

On Thursday evening, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi man named Kamrul Islam was shot and killed in Wepener, Free State Province, South Africa. Originally from Karmullahpur village in the Daganbhuiyan upazila, Mr. Islam had immigrated to South Africa twelve years prior, eventually establishing his own business after working for a short time.

According to Kamruzzaman, Kamrul’s younger brother, the incident occurred while Kamrul was closing his shop around 9:00 PM. Two assailants approached him with the intent to rob. They threatened Kamrul at gunpoint and stole cash and valuables from the store.

The robbers, suspecting additional cash in Kamrul’s vehicle, forced him to accompany them outside. In a struggle, one of the attackers shot Kamrul in the chest, resulting in his immediate death. Kamrul was preparing to return to Bangladesh to marry, having recently completed a new home in his village.

The tragic news has severely affected his family, with their mother reportedly fainting upon receiving the news of her son’s death. Kamrul’s family has reached out to the Bangladesh embassy for assistance in repatriating his body. Daganbhuiyan upazila nirbahi officer SM Azharul Islam expressed the upazila administration’s readiness to provide support in this matter.

The tragic incident involving the murder of Kamrul Islam underscores the dangers faced by expatriates in foreign countries. His family, devastated by this loss, is seeking assistance from governmental authorities to ensure his body is returned to Bangladesh. As the community mourns, local officials have pledged their support to the grieving family in this difficult time.
