Kenya Meteorological Department Warns of Heavy Rains This Weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of moderate to heavy rains across various regions in Kenya from March 14 to March 17. Highland East counties will experience rain intensifying over the weekend, while Southeastern areas face heavy downpours starting Saturday afternoon. Cold nights and high daytime temperatures are expected in different regions during this period.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding moderate to heavy rainfall expected across the country from Friday, March 14, through Tuesday, March 17. This advisory, released on March 13, highlighted that the Highland East counties, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, and Nairobi, will first experience moderate rain, which is anticipated to intensify thereafter.
Additionally, heavy rains are predicted for the Highland West and Lake Victoria basin counties, such as Siaya and Kisumu, starting Saturday, March 15. Counties including Nandi, Nakuru, and Kericho are also likely to experience similar heavy rainfall during this period.
Residents in the Southeastern counties—Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta—are advised to prepare for rain commencing Saturday afternoon, which will persist over three days until Tuesday. Coastal counties, including Mombasa and Kwale, may receive only light precipitation.
The meteorological department has also cautioned residents in the Highland East counties of the likelihood of very cold nights, with temperatures dropping to 5°C. This cold snap is expected to last for five days, beginning March 14.
Conversely, counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, and Nakuru face significantly high daytime temperatures, which can reach up to 35°C. Other regions like Marsabit and Garissa are also forecasted to experience elevated temperatures during the day.
In summary, Kenyans should prepare for heavy rains across multiple counties this weekend, with specific warnings about cold nighttime temperatures in certain regions. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions as the rainy season progresses, particularly in areas prone to flooding and temperature fluctuations. The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation closely to provide updates as needed.
