SMA Altenso has achieved over 1 gigawatt in hydrogen technology with projects including a major initiative in Namibia. The company emphasizes its capabilities in integrating renewable energy solutions, aiding in substantial green hydrogen production and contributing to decarbonization efforts through innovative technologies and extensive project experience.

SMA Altenso, a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, is enhancing the flexible use of renewable energy through innovative projects worldwide. Recently, the company successfully installed inverter technology for Cleanergy Solutions Namibia’s hydrogen project, marking a notable achievement of over 1 gigawatt (GW) in power delivery for hydrogen applications. This project exemplifies Altenso’s strategic leadership in sustainable energy by integrating photovoltaics, battery storage, and hydrogen production.

Dr. Jens Eiko Birkholz, Head of Sales & Business Development at Altenso, acknowledged reaching this gigawatt milestone and the successful execution of more than 80 hydrogen initiatives, primarily focused on generating green hydrogen from photovoltaic and wind energy. He emphasized Altenso’s deep technological competence and its international project management expertise, which are vital for managing increasingly complex projects, including those offshore. These projects facilitate the annual production of 130,000 tons of green hydrogen, significantly aiding industrial decarbonization efforts.

SMA CEO Jürgen Reinert underscored the significance of stable grid integration and load management within the developing hydrogen and renewable energy market. He articulated how SMA’s advanced technologies combined with Altenso’s project expertise are instrumental in advancing renewable energy integration and forging a new energy landscape.

In Namibia, Altenso is spearheading system integration for a battery storage system (BESS) and developing power-to-gas (P2G) solutions for hydrogen production at a project along the Atlantic coast. The installation of the photovoltaic farm and battery inverter technology is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, with hydrogen production anticipated to commence in mid-2025. SMA’s specialized rectifier solution, utilizing IGBT technology, guarantees compatibility with various electrolyzers while also enhancing grid stability through integrated services, such as fault ride-through and reactive power support.

Furthermore, Altenso has developed a sophisticated energy management system (EMS) specifically tailored to optimize hydrogen production. This system leverages photovoltaic forecasts and dynamic demand profiles to support sustainable hydrogen generation efficiently.

SMA Altenso’s recent milestone of surpassing 1 gigawatt in hydrogen technology highlights its leadership in sustainable energy initiatives. By deploying advanced technologies and expertise, the company continues to foster significant contributions to green hydrogen production. Through strategic projects like the Namibia initiative, Altenso exemplifies its commitment to renewable energy and decarbonization, setting the stage for future advancements in the energy industry.
