Morocco is experiencing severe weather due to the atmospheric depression “Jana,” with heavy snowfall, rainfall, and strong winds anticipated. Alerts have been issued across various provinces, and residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow official updates.

Houcine Youaabed, head of the communication department at the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), provided detailed insights into the ongoing severe weather conditions in Morocco, attributed to a significant atmospheric depression named “Jana.” This phenomenon, named by the Spanish meteorological agency, has influenced weather patterns in western and southern Europe before impacting Morocco, with particularly intense conditions noted in the northern and Rif regions.

The DGM has issued warnings that the atmospheric depression, combined with cold air masses, will extend its effects from Portugal to Morocco from Sunday to Tuesday. Residents of the Kingdom are urged to stay alert and monitor weather updates closely to ensure their safety.

Forecasts predict heavy snowfall of 40 to 70 cm at elevations above 1,500 meters in provinces such as Ifrane, Azilal, Béni Mellal, and Midelt from Saturday afternoon to Monday afternoon. An orange-level alert indicates that other regions, including Guercif, Taza, and Chefchaouen, may experience snowfall between 20 to 40 cm during the same duration.

Heavy rainfall, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, is also expected. Accumulations ranging from 80 to 150 mm are projected from Saturday morning to Monday evening in the provinces of Tanger-Assilah and Al Hoceima among others. An orange-level alert encompasses areas like Ifrane and Béni Mellal, where precipitation will reach 40 to 80 mm from Saturday morning to Sunday evening.

The DGM has also warned of strong wind gusts, reaching speeds of 70 to 95 km/h, anticipated in multiple provinces including Chefchaouen and Tangier-Assilah from Saturday morning until Sunday night. Some areas, such as Jerada and Oujda-Angad, will experience similar gusts under an orange-level alert, reinforcing the severity of the weather conditions ahead.

In summary, Morocco is currently facing severe weather conditions due to the atmospheric depression “Jana,” which has extended from Europe. The DGM has issued multiple alerts regarding heavy snowfall, substantial rainfall, and strong winds across various regions, urging residents to stay vigilant and adhere to weather updates for safety.
