Authorities in Loudoun County, Virginia, have publicly identified a 24-year-old man as a person of interest regarding the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a missing college student. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office clarified that this status does not equate to a criminal case at this time. New developments emerged following the release of security footage by Noticias SIN, showing Konanki alongside friends on March 6, prior to her disappearance.
The security footage depicts Sudiksha and her group heading toward the beach in Punta Cana during the early morning of March 6. Approximately one hour later, the footage shows her friends returning to their hotel, while Konanki and the man in question were notably absent from the footage. Reportedly, the man informed authorities that they had been swimming, subsequently found himself asleep on the beach.
The person of interest has not faced any criminal charges, and authorities in the Dominican Republic do not categorize him as a suspect in Konanki’s case. Sudiksha disappeared shortly after she traveled to the Dominican Republic for spring break with several fellow University of Pittsburgh students, where she was reportedly studying medicine.
Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman disclosed that Konanki was last seen with friends as well as other individuals whom she had not traveled with. “They were not people that traveled with her. They were not people from the University of Pittsburgh. They were people that they met down there,” Sheriff Chapman informed 7News. He also noted that U.S. federal authorities, including the FBI, have been engaged in the investigation on-site in the Dominican Republic.
As it stands, the case is being treated primarily as an accident, with indications suggesting that Sudiksha may have drowned during her time at the beach.
