A Ugandan Arsenal fan, John Ssenyonga, was shot dead while celebrating his team’s victory over Manchester United. The incident occurred after a security guard intervened due to noise complaints, leading to gunfire. Another fan was injured. Authorities are investigating and seeking to address the issue of violence among football fans in Uganda.

A tragic incident occurred in Uganda involving an Arsenal football fan named John Ssenyonga, aged 30, who was shot dead while celebrating his team’s victory over Manchester United. This event took place in Lukaya, roughly 100 kilometers from Kampala, soon after Arsenal secured a 2-0 win. The celebration escalated when the fans’ excitement led to a security guard being asked to intervene due to excessive noise, which resulted in the guard opening fire on the crowd.

Another fan sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Witnesses reported that a restaurant manager became frustrated with the noise from the celebrating fans and requested security to act. Rather than quieting down, the fans only grew louder, leading to the unfortunate decision to use a firearm.

Following the shooting, both the security guard and the restaurant manager are in hiding, as police initiate a manhunt for them. The local police chief, Twaha Kasirye, condemned the incident and encouraged anyone with relevant information to aid in the investigation, stressing the need for fans to manage their celebrations responsibly.

Violent incidents linked to football fandom, particularly involving English teams, have been noted previously in Uganda. Earlier this year, an Arsenal supporter stabbed a Manchester United fan after a match, and last year a youth worker died from stab wounds following a confrontation related to a game. Such events highlight the concerning trend of football-related violence in the region, underscoring a need for interventions to promote safer environments for sports fans.

The recent shooting of an Arsenal supporter in Uganda during a celebratory moment following his team’s victory has revealed the dark side of football fandom in the region. This incident not only resulted in a loss of life but also brought attention to the ongoing issue of violence among sports fans. Authorities are now working to address these concerns and promote a more peaceful atmosphere for supporters of all teams.
