The Nigerian Bar Association’s Minna Branch has condemned the rising cases of police shootings and extrajudicial killings in Niger State. They are urging investigations, accountability for the officers involved, compensation for victims’ families, and essential reforms to restore public trust in law enforcement agencies.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Minna Branch, has expressed grave concerns over the surge of reckless police shootings and extrajudicial killings in Niger State. They have called upon local law enforcement to thoroughly investigate these incidents and hold accountable those officers involved. The NBA demands compensation for the families of victims and urges the implementation of preventive measures to ensure such occurrences do not happen again.

In a formal communication directed to the Niger State Commissioner of Police, the NBA Minna Branch, represented by its Chairman Barr. Isyaku Barau, condemned the unlawful killings that have led to a breach of fundamental human rights and have eroded public confidence in law enforcement agencies. He specifically referenced three recent cases: the fatal shooting of a Keke NAPEP rider, the tragic shooting of a female immigration officer, and the murder of a young footballer, allegedly executed by an intoxicated police officer.

Barr. Barau stated, “These events are part of a troubling pattern of extrajudicial killings,” emphasizing the urgent need for accountability. He reiterated the call for immediate police action, which includes conducting thorough investigations, prosecuting the officers involved, compensating victims’ families, and revising firearm handling protocols along with psychological evaluations for officers currently on duty.

The NBA Minna Branch also issued a stern warning that any efforts to conceal the identities of those responsible would provoke robust legal repercussions and heightened public advocacy. They stressed the critical importance of safeguarding lives and property, making a strong case for police reform to rebuild and restore public trust in the law enforcement system.

In conclusion, the Nigerian Bar Association’s Minna Branch has taken a firm stance against police brutality in Niger State. By demanding investigations into extrajudicial killings, accountability for officers involved, and protective reforms, the NBA aims to restore public confidence in law enforcement. Their actions highlight the need for urgent reforms to protect fundamental human rights and prevent future violence by those in authority.
