Morocco is currently experiencing heavy rainfall and snowfall, providing relief for its drought-affected agricultural sector. Weather alerts are in place for various provinces, forecasting up to 70 millimeters of rain and significant snowfall. Authorities emphasize the need for vigilance against flooding.

Heavy rainfall and snowfall are currently affecting various provinces in Morocco, providing much-needed respite to the nation’s agricultural sector, which has been severely impacted by ongoing drought conditions. According to Morocco’s weather office, alerts were issued for heavy rain and thunderstorms, in addition to snowfall at high altitudes exceeding 2,000 meters.

Rainfall is anticipated to reach between 50 and 70 millimeters, primarily affecting Tangier-Assilah, Fahs Anjra, Larache, Kenitra, Sidi Kaceem, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Oezzane, Taounate, Taza, and Al Hoceima from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Additionally, 25 to 35 millimeters of rain are expected in Rabat, Sale, Skhirat-Temara, Khemisset, Ifrane, Khenifra, Sidi Slimane, Fez, Meknes, and Moulay Yacoub, from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. today.

Snowfall ranging from 10 to 30 centimeters is projected for areas above 2,000 meters, including provinces such as Azilal, Al Haouz, Midelt, Ifrane, and Tinghir, as well as Boulemane, between 1 p.m. and midnight today. This weather pattern is anticipated to persist for nearly a week, affecting numerous provinces across Morocco from north to south.

Meteorological experts attribute these weather conditions to the Jana storm, which has been affecting Western Europe. Houcine Youabed, head of the communication service at Morocco’s Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), indicated that this rainfall will benefit agricultural practices and water reservoir levels but emphasized the urgency of precautionary measures against potential flooding risks.

Youabed stressed the importance of monitoring weather updates and exercising caution near riverbeds to avoid any reckless behavior. He reported that Tangier experienced the highest rainfall, measuring at 82 millimeters, closely followed by Rabat at 66 millimeters and Casablanca at 42 millimeters.

The recent heavy rainfall in Morocco is a crucial relief for its agricultural sector, which has suffered from drought. While the precipitation is beneficial, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant regarding potential flooding and to stay updated on weather advisories. The storm’s impact is expected to extend over the coming week, with multiple provinces experiencing significant rainfall and snowfall.
