On January 6, 2025, outbreaks of desert locusts continued to affect various regions, with notable developments in Niger, Sudan, and a newly reported outbreak in Eritrea. The situation includes active groups, bands, and small swarms primarily concentrated in Sudan, while Eritrea experiences groups and bands. Additionally, scattered locusts and smaller groups have been identified along the coasts of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, along with some swarms in Oman and isolated adults in northwest Somalia and India. Groups have also emerged in Niger and Algeria, with isolated hoppers and adults recorded in Mauritania and a few adults in Morocco.

In summary, the desert locust situation remains serious, with continued outbreaks in Niger and Sudan, as well as an emerging outbreak in Eritrea. Control operations have significantly escalated as breeding conditions improve, particularly along the Red Sea coast. Looking ahead, it is crucial to monitor breeding patterns and implement necessary control measures to mitigate further spread. Rainfall could enhance breeding potential in affected areas, necessitating ongoing management efforts.
