In Gwanda, a Chinese mining supervisor, Yang Zhian, aged 36, has been remanded in custody for the alleged murder of an artisanal miner. The incident occurred on March 5, when Zhian is accused of fatally shooting 31-year-old Pardon Gumbo following a confrontation concerning illegal gold prospecting activities at Long Fortune Mine in Collen Bawn.
Authorities reported that Gumbo and a group of artisanal miners were prospecting illegally using metal detectors and a mattock when a security guard, Gift Tashinga Mandeya, confronted them. Despite Mandeya’s efforts to stop the miners, they proceeded toward a slime dam, prompting him to inform Zhian of the situation. Zhian allegedly armed himself and fired shots toward the group, resulting in Gumbo sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to the forehead.
Gumbo was transported to Gwanda Provincial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Zhian has since appeared in court and will remain in custody while investigations into the matter continue, with the next court date set for March 21.
The case surrounding the tragic shooting highlights significant concerns regarding illegal mining activities and the enforcement of laws against such practices in Zimbabwe. The remand of Yang Zhian reflects the authorities’ commitment to investigate the incident fully as it progresses through the legal system.
