Three Arlington House delegates have announced re-election bids, expected to win as nominees in Democratic strongholds. The School Board election involves two candidates, while new Young Republican leadership was established for 2025. Voter engagement remains critical for upcoming elections.

Last week, three members of Arlington’s House of Delegates announced their bids for re-election: Dels. Adele McClure (D-2), Patrick Hope (D-1), and Alfonso Lopez (D-3). The announcements were made at the Arlington County Democratic Committee’s monthly meeting on March 5, following the conclusion of the 2025 legislative session.

Adele McClure remarked on the importance of their work, stating, “There is still so much to do, especially now. Every person in this room knows exactly what we are up against.” Patrick Hope, the senior member of the delegation, emphasized his experience in delivering results for Arlington, stating, “I have delivered for Arlington and I know how to get things done” as he campaigns for his ninth term. Alfonso Lopez expressed his commitment to Arlington values, stating, “There’s nothing more rewarding than helping people. We need to create more prosperity and do it in a way where everyone wins.”

All three delegates represent Democratic strongholds, with the party nominee expected to win in the general election. Currently, McClure and Lopez face no competition for their nominations, while Hope is challenged by Arjoon Srikanth, who initiated his candidacy on February 5. The deadline for Democratic candidate filings is April 3, with contested nominations determined in a primary on June 17.

The General Assembly, which has slim Democratic majorities in both houses, will also see races for governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general in upcoming elections. Kip Malinosky, former chair of the county Democrats, stated, “We’re well-positioned to win. We need turnout, we need margin, we need to make sure we vote up and down the ballot.”

In the Democratic caucus for the School Board, only two candidates, Monique “Moe” Bryant and June Prakash, emerged ahead of the February 28 filing deadline. They will compete in caucus voting from April 19 to May 10. The winner will advance to the general election on November 4, where the presumptive favorite will be the Democratic endorsee. The current School Board member, Mary Kadera, announced she would not seek re-election, marking a key change in the electoral landscape.

Furthermore, the Arlington-Alexandria-Falls Church Young Republicans have elected new leadership for 2025, with Daniel Turner taking the role of chair. The organization aims to enhance their efforts ahead of the 2025 election cycle. Their next meeting is scheduled for March 17.

In summary, the re-election bids of Arlington’s House delegates highlight the ongoing commitment to local Democratic values and the importance of voter engagement. The unopposed candidates and those facing challenges impact the electoral landscape, alongside the School Board elections. With young Republican leadership being established, the political environment in Arlington is increasingly dynamic as the 2025 elections approach.
