A man named Collins Letting established an illegal police station in Uasin Gishu, operating without authorization for six months. The location, disguised with police branding, targeted illegal timber operations, deceiving residents about its legitimacy. Local authorities have launched investigations following its discovery.
In Uasin Gishu, Mr. Collins Letting, known as Chepkulei, has been operating an unauthorized police station for six months without the knowledge or approval of authorities. This controversial individual, who resides in Eldoret and has a history with the law, established the facility at Cherus Centre in Kesses, targeting illegal timber operations from Cengalo Forest. Surprisingly, even the local chief was unaware that this station lacked legitimacy.
The police became aware of the operation on March 8 and reported it to Kamuyu Police Post. In their findings, they were astonished to encounter a fully functional facility that bore police branding, despite no official authorization being granted. The National Police Service Act of 2014 stipulates that only the Inspector General of Police has the power to establish police stations and patrol bases in Kenya.
The motive behind Mr. Letting’s actions remains unclear, although he is noted to have connections with influential individuals, which may have deceived the community into believing the station’s validity. A local resident expressed shock upon learning about the illegitimacy of the station, highlighting concerns about public safety and trust in law enforcement.
Uasin Gishu County police commander Benjamin Mwanthi has promised that thorough investigations are underway. A team from Kesses sub-County will gather more information about the incident, and Mr. Mwanthi reassured residents of their safety while inquiries continue. Local meetings are planned to discuss the situation further with the community.
The situation surrounding the unauthorized police station established by Mr. Collins Letting raises significant concerns regarding public safety and law enforcement integrity in Uasin Gishu. The incident, which went undetected for six months, reflects serious lapses in regulatory oversight and impacts community trust. With ongoing investigations, authorities aim to address this breach of protocol and restore confidence in local security measures.
