Rahul Gandhi Calls for Parliamentary Discussion on Voter List Concerns

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, called for a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the troubling issue of voter lists, raising concerns that have been echoed by various political parties. During the Zero Hour session, Mr. Gandhi emphasized the need for dialogue regarding the voter lists, highlighting that the entire opposition stands united on this matter.
Mr. Gandhi stated, “We accept your remarks that the government does not make voter lists. But we demand a discussion on the issue.” He pointed out that there are significant nationwide questions regarding the integrity of the voter lists, which have been raised consistently by the opposition in every state, including Maharashtra.
In addition to Mr. Gandhi’s remarks, Saugata Roy of the Trinamool Congress highlighted flaws in the voter lists, referencing concerns raised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Notably, discrepancies have been observed in voter lists where individuals possess the same Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers in different parliamentary constituencies, including Murshidabad and Burdwan, as well as Haryana.
Mr. Roy noted that a Trinamool delegation plans to meet with the newly-appointed Chief Election Commissioner to express these serious concerns. He further insisted on a comprehensive revision of the voter lists, especially with the assembly elections approaching in West Bengal and Assam next year, stating, “Let the total voter lists be thoroughly revised. The Election Commission should answer to the country why some mistakes occurred in the lists.”
Additionally, he raised issues of inflated voter lists in Maharashtra and concerns about the electoral integrity in Haryana, expressing the urgency for rectifications in light of the forthcoming elections in West Bengal and Assam.
