The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding heavy rainfall across multiple regions of the country, accompanied by a flash-flood alert. Major areas predicted to experience rainfall include Nairobi, Kiambu, Marsabit, Machakos, and Turkana. The intense rainfall is expected to surpass 30mm within 24 hours and will extend to northwestern Kenya by March 10, 2025.
In addition, the Weatherman anticipates more than 20mm of precipitation in the Lake Victoria Basin, and along the Rift Valley and its highlands during the same period. Residents are advised to be exceptionally cautious, particularly in flood-prone locales, as heavy rainfall is expected in counties such as Narok, Kericho, and Bomet, among others.
Additional areas facing potential flooding include Homa Bay, Kisumu, Kakamega, and Nyeri. Officials from Nairobi have specifically recommended that residents near riparian zones relocate at least 30 meters from riverbanks to mitigate flood-related hazards.
Geoffrey Mosiria, the Environment Chief Officer, has emphasized the importance of maintaining clear drainage systems to prevent flooding. He urged residents returning to check that their locality’s drainage is free of obstruction and advised them to move away from riverbanks to ensure their safety as the rains approach.
