Guatemalan authorities have evacuated around one thousand residents due to eruptions from the Fuego volcano, which is Central America’s most active volcano. The situation has led to the establishment of temporary shelters and precautionary measures including road closures and school suspensions. The history of the volcano’s eruptive activity emphasizes the ongoing risks associated with it.

In Guatemala, authorities have evacuated approximately one thousand residents following an eruption of the Fuego volcano, known for its high activity. Eruptions began escalating on Sunday, prompting the establishment of temporary shelters for evacuees. Manuel Cobox, who fled with his family, described the eruption’s intensity, expressing hope for a swift calming of the volcanic activity.

The disaster coordination agency Conred confirmed that around 900 individuals from the community of El Porvenir were relocated, alongside additional evacuations from Las Lajitas. Authorities organized transport for the evacuees to a town hall repurposed as a shelter.

The Fuego volcano has a tragic history, with a significant eruption in 2018 leading to 215 deaths and many missing. A previous eruption in 2023 necessitated the evacuation of around 1,200 individuals. In response to the current situation, an alert has been issued to coordinate safety measures and local school activities have been suspended.

Additionally, a road that connects southern Guatemala to the tourist city of Antigua has been closed as a preventative measure. The Volcanology Institute has also advised caution for air traffic due to ash dispersing approximately 50 kilometers west of the volcano.

In summary, the eruption of the Fuego volcano has led to the evacuation of nearly one thousand residents in Guatemala, highlighting ongoing risks associated with this volatile natural feature. Previous eruptions have resulted in significant casualties, prompting current preemptive measures such as school suspensions and road closures. The coordination from authorities exemplifies efforts to safeguard public health and safety during such emergencies.
