Nigeria’s North-East to Implement Electric Vehicle Transportation Initiative
The Tinubu administration in Nigeria is set to initiate mass electric vehicle transport in northeast Nigeria, having received approval from the Federal Executive Council. Contracts amounting to nearly $100 million have been authorized for supplying electric buses and tricycles, alongside building charging infrastructure. The effort is backed by the North East Development Commission to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in the region.
The Tinubu administration is poised to launch a mass electric vehicle initiative in northeast Nigeria. This development follows the Federal Executive Council’s recent approval to facilitate the plan, having cleared the final requirement. Nearly $100 million (N151.9 billion) has been allocated through contracts for the procurement of electric buses, tricycles, and the establishment of charging infrastructure.
The council has permitted the supply of ten 17-seater electric buses by Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited, with a delivery timeframe of six months for a contract sum of N2.9 billion. Furthermore, Mutual Commitment Company Limited has been contracted to provide 4,000 e-tricycles, valued at N49.6 billion, within a period of nine months. Additional supply of 3,000 tricycles by Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development is valued at N37.2 billion, while Sinoma Investment International Limited will also supply another 3,000 e-tricycles.
Each tricycle is designed to accommodate nine passengers plus the driver. In a separate contract worth N16.3 billion, HNCEGC will provide 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs. Simultaneously, KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited has been tasked with building charging facilities for these e-buses and tricycles for N8.4 billion.
The funding for these contracts will be provided by the North East Development Commission, reinforcing a strategic commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy efficiency in the region. President Tinubu had previously approved the acquisition of these electric vehicles in October of the prior year, following an inspection of the vehicle samples, chargers, and batteries.
The mass electric vehicle project marks a significant step towards sustainable transportation in northeast Nigeria, facilitated by robust support from the government.
