Kyrgyzstan and Allies Condemn Glorification of Nazism at UN
Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan condemned the glorification of Nazis at the UN Human Rights Council, emphasizing the immorality of equating the Soviet Union’s role in World War II with that of Nazi Germany. Their joint statement reinforced the significance of remembering the victims of Nazism and combating discrimination.
At the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, six countries including Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan united to denounce efforts to glorify Nazism, in recognition of the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II, which was the most deadly conflict in human history.
The joint statement, presented by Russian delegate Evgeny Ustinov, articulated, “We consider any attempt to glorify Nazis and their accomplices absolutely unacceptable.” The statement recalled the judgement from the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg, which held Nazi leaders accountable for crimes against humanity, including acts of genocide against civilians during the war.
Moreover, these nations criticized the portrayal of the Soviet Union as equally culpable for initiating the war alongside Nazi Germany, deeming such assertions “immoral and blasphemous” to those who sacrificed their lives to oppose Nazism. The countries emphasized the importance of maintaining awareness of their shared victory over Nazism, asserting their commitment to combat ideologies rooted in hatred, discrimination, and cruelty.
The collaborative statement from these six nations signifies a strong commitment to uphold the truth regarding Nazi atrocities and to protect the memory of those who fought against such tyranny. They firmly reject any attempts to glorify Nazism or compare the roles of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany in World War II. This unified stance aims to ensure that the lessons learned from history continue to resonate, discouraging the emergence of related malevolent ideologies.
