Eight Suspects Detained Over Site Engineer’s Murder in Edo

The Edo Police arrested eight suspects related to the murder of Efe Ogbeide, a site engineer, amid a leadership crisis in Benin’s Obazagbon Community. CSP Moses Yamu confirmed that Joshua Edo, the community youth chairman, is the prime suspect. Civil society organizations have protested the killing, demanding justice and better protections for individuals with disabilities.

The Edo Police Command has apprehended eight individuals linked to the alleged murder of Efe Ogbeide, a site engineer, amidst a leadership dispute in Obazagbon Community, Benin. Police spokesperson CSP Moses Yamu confirmed these detentions on Thursday, naming Joshua Edo, the community youth chairman, as the primary suspect along with seven others.

The remaining suspects include Obayuwana Happy, Uhunwangho Everest, Chidera Umeh, Simon Benjamin, Odion Adagbonyin, Kennedy Ohro, and Osayi Adagbonyin. Yamu noted that they were captured by operatives from the Iyekogba Division’s Operation Rescue and Anti-Kidnapping Unit at various locations within the community.

The violent confrontation arose from disputes regarding the roles of Chairman and traditional leader, Okiaghele, resulting in fatalities and significant property damage. Commissioner of Police Betty Isokpan condemned the violence, promising that those responsible would be held accountable, while assuring residents of the police’s dedication to their safety.

The murder of Mr. Ogbeide has provoked strong reactions from civil society organizations. The Network for the Advancement of People with Visible Disabilities (NAPVID), along with the Edo State Civil Society Organisations, organized a demonstration on Tuesday, expressing outrage over the tragic loss of the hardworking engineer. NAPVID Executive Director, Melody Omosha, highlighted that Ogbeide, who was deaf, may not have received any warnings prior to the assault. The protestors demanded justice and enhanced protections for individuals with disabilities in Edo State.
