According to South Korean lawmaker Yu, North Korea has dispatched an additional 3,500 soldiers to Russia in preparation for deployment in Ukraine. This follows the earlier deployment of 1,500 troops in January and February, aimed at replacing casualties among the 11,000 soldiers initially sent to the Russian city of Kursk in October. Ukrainian intelligence has reported that psychological tactics to encourage North Korean soldiers to surrender have had limited success.
Yu disclosed that these 3,500 North Korean troops are currently engaged in field adaptation training across five sites in Russia’s Far East, indicating a potential for a further deployment of troops. This information was obtained during briefings with Kyrylo Budanov, the chief of Ukraine’s defence intelligence, during Yu’s visit to Ukraine from February 23 to 26.
As reported, approximately 400 North Korean soldiers have been killed in combat, and around 3,600 have suffered injuries. Notably, 300 of the wounded troops have returned to the front lines subsequent to their recovery, demonstrating a continued commitment to the conflict in Ukraine.
