A recent cross-border operation aimed at addressing crimes along the borders between the Republic of South Africa (RSA) and Namibia was conducted from February 27 to March 2. This multi-disciplinary initiative involved various agencies, including the South African Police Service, Customs, the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency, and the Border Management Authority, resulting in notable achievements in border security.
According to Provincial Police Spokesperson Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, operations included search and seizure activities, vehicle checkpoints, and border patrols specifically targeting criminal activities prevalent in the area. The efforts led to the inspection of 1,065 vehicles and 1,489 individuals, ultimately resulting in three arrests for illegal drug possession and undocumented foreign nationals.
The operation successfully seized Mandrax valued at R4,525, as well as cash thought to be linked to criminal activities. Additionally, authorities confiscated fish nets, fish traps, illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R150,156, and tobacco products amounting to approximately R2,000. Traffic violations also led to fines totaling R14,600 for contraventions.
Colonel Ehlers emphasized that such operations will persist between the RSA and its neighboring countries to maintain safety and security along the borders. Additionally, incidents of extortion can be reported to the National Extortion Hotline at 0800-911-011.
