Friends Only. has recently unveiled a noteworthy musical project entitled “Born In Jamaica,” featuring acclaimed artists Jesse Royal, MediSun, and Beres Hammond. The track is produced by J.L.L. and is currently available on popular streaming platforms including YouTube, Soundcloud, and Audiomack. This marks the beginning of a creative initiative that aims to celebrate the cultural heritage and talent of Jamaica while collaborating internationally.
The Friends Only. Writing Camp held in August 2020, played a pivotal role in this project. Co-producers Natalie Prospere and Alex Rivas aimed to foster a sense of community by bringing together diverse talents from Jamaica and abroad. This week-long retreat in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, promoted artistic collaboration, inspiration, and cultural exchange during challenging times, emphasizing the healing power of music.
Prospere and Rivas stated, “We curated a project born out of a rebirth of organic artist collaborations, featuring some of the most talented Jamaican & American artists of today. Seamlessly blending reggae, hip-hop, dancehall, and R&B sounds. We produced a culturally honest and authentic project.” Their efforts have led to the upcoming release of “Friends Only. Vol 1” in summer 2025.
The lyrics of “Born In Jamaica” highlight themes of resilience and cultural pride. Jesse Royal opens with a powerful message empowering youth, while MediSun reflects on their experiences and struggles. Beres Hammond contributes to the chorus and subsequent verses with a celebration of life in Jamaica, encapsulating the vibrancy of the island. The song concludes with a heartfelt prayer seeking divine guidance, emphasizing faith through artistry.
In summary, the collaboration in “Born In Jamaica” exemplifies the synergy between Jamaican and American artists, fostering cultural unity and resilience through music. The Friends Only. initiative not only highlights emerging talent but also serves as a platform for creative expression in challenging times. The anticipated release of Friends Only. Vol 1 in summer 2025 promises to further enrich the musical landscape created during the writing camp in 2020.
