BSF Shoots and Kills Bangladeshi Youth at Kasba Border

A young Bangladeshi male was fatally shot by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Kasba border in Brahmanbaria. This incident transpired around 7:30 PM on Friday evening. The victim, identified as Al-Amin, 32 years old, was a resident of Dakshin Putiya village within the Bayek union. According to local sources, he suffered injuries when BSF personnel discharged rubber bullets at a group of Bangladeshis near the border. Following the shooting, Al-Amin was apprehended by the BSF and later died while receiving medical treatment at their camp around 9:00 PM. His body remains at the BSF facility.

Billal Hossain, the chairman of the Bayek union parishad, verified the occurrence but emphasized that the reasons behind the shooting are still uncertain. Communication with the victim’s family was hampered due to their residence being located in a network-deprived area. It is noteworthy that Dakshin Putiya is known for its crime rates and smuggling activities; reports suggest that Al-Amin had associations with sugar smuggling.

Samiul Islam, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), informed Prothom Alo that the BSF fired at Al-Amin under the suspicion that he was a smuggler. He also mentioned that after the incident, BSF personnel transported the wounded man to their camp for treatment, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries that night. Communication with the BSF has been established through the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and a meeting is scheduled to take place to discuss the matter. It is anticipated that the deceased’s body will be returned during this meeting.

Residents of the area recounted that two other youths were killed along the border on November 25 of the previous year, and another individual was similarly shot on April 22. Such incidents raise concerns about border security and the treatment of individuals suspected of illegal activities.
