Thai authorities have apprehended a Singaporean man suspected of executing cyber attacks on over 70 organizations across various countries. The 39-year-old suspect, identified as Chia, was taken into custody in Bangkok following a coordinated operation with Singaporean officials. Chia’s detention was prompted by a complaint from a Thai enterprise that reported receiving extortion threats via the X account ‘@0mid16b’. The threats demanded monetary payment in exchange for withholding stolen customer data. Police stated the investigation commenced post-complaint.
In his confession, Chia admitted to breaching multiple company databases and selling the purloined data. Since 2020, he has reportedly targeted over 70 organizations, including 20 within Thailand. During the raid, authorities seized luxury items and gold valued at approximately $300,000.
Charges against Chia include extortion, unauthorized computer system access, and illegal residency in Thailand. A Singapore-based cybersecurity firm, Group-IB, supported the investigation, revealing that Chia operated under multiple aliases like Altdos and GhostR while being connected to a substantial 13 terabytes of stolen data affecting multiple sectors such as healthcare and finance.
The arrest of Chia underscores the ongoing battle against cybercrime globally, highlighting the collaborative efforts of international law enforcement. His extensive network of illicit activities, targeting numerous organizations for sensitive data theft, reveals significant vulnerabilities within cybersecurity frameworks.
