Rofiat Lawal, a NYSC member, was kidnapped on the Benin-Ore Expressway while returning to Ibadan. Her abductors are demanding ₦20 million for her release, and her family is struggling to cope with the situation. The Oyo State NYSC Coordinator has confirmed the incident and reported that security agencies are involved.
A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Oyo State, Rofiat Lawal, was reportedly kidnapped along the Benin-Ore Expressway. She was returning to her primary assignment in Ibadan after a trip to Benin, Edo State, when the incident occurred on Tuesday. Social media posts indicate that her abductors are demanding a ransom of ₦20 million for her release.
According to a post by a friend, Rofiat was traveling on a bus when she was taken. Her friend expressed the family’s distress, highlighting their economic difficulties in affording the ransom and calling for assistance from the public. They have reached out to the NYSC secretariat, but have not received a timely response.
Odoba Oche, the Oyo State NYSC Coordinator, confirmed the abduction in a recent telephone conversation. He indicated that local law enforcement and security agencies have been notified and are taking appropriate measures. However, he stated that he was unaware of any ransom negotiations initiated by the kidnappers, emphasizing the importance of reporting travel plans to the NYSC.
The kidnapping of Rofiat Lawal underscores the growing security concerns along major highways in Nigeria, particularly for young individuals traveling without prior notification to authorities. The NYSC’s emphasis on safety and communication underscores the need for corps members to adhere to guidelines. The situation calls for urgent public awareness and assistance to ensure Rofiat’s safe return.
