The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) anticipates the formation of two tropical cyclones, ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, between Thursday and Friday near Madagascar. Tropical Storm Honde is likely to strengthen and impact the Mozambique Channel, potentially causing heavy rains. Garance, while also developing, poses no threat to Mozambique. Precautionary measures in maritime navigation are advised.

The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has forecast the formation of two tropical cyclones, ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, expected between Thursday and Friday in the southern and eastern regions of Madagascar. These systems may generate strong winds in the Mozambique Channel, with Tropical Storm Honde currently located approximately 250 kilometers from Inhambane province, advancing southward towards Madagascar.

As Tropical Storm Honde continues to approach, it is anticipated to develop into a tropical cyclone by Friday, February 28th. This development could result in powerful winds across the Mozambique Channel, with possible light to moderate rainfall, and locally heavy showers impacting various areas within Mozambique.

Meteorologist Lelo Tayob clarified that although the storm system resides at sea, its significant size influences atmospheric circulation patterns, resulting in rainfall on land. “This system is not in our country; it is at sea, in the Mozambique Channel. However, it is large and impacts the general circulation of the atmosphere, and this generates rain.”

In contrast, Tropical Storm Garance is progressing east of Madagascar and may also transform into a tropical cyclone. However, this system does not pose any threat to Mozambique. Tayob remarked on its trajectory, stating, “Given its size, location and movement, which is far from Madagascar, it will not have an impact on the continental part of our country.”

INAM has urged precautionary measures, particularly concerning maritime navigation, in light of the impending cyclonic activity, emphasizing the importance of safety in the face of these weather phenomena.

In summary, INAM has predicted the potential development of two cyclones, ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance’, within the Mozambique Channel, with Honde likely to bring strong winds and varying rainfall to Mozambique. However, the impacts of both storms are largely maritime, and safety precautions are advised, particularly for those navigating the affected waters. Immediate and ongoing monitoring of the weather is essential as the situation unfolds.
