Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has been charged with abuse of power for attempting to conduct a presidential election during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The prosecution has revealed that he sought to utilize mail-in ballots and allegedly circumvented state election authorities, causing the government to incur a loss of 70 million złoty (approximately €17 million). Despite plans for a mail-in election, it did not materialize; Poland subsequently held an in-person election months later, which resulted in a narrow victory for the pro-PiS incumbent, Andrzej Duda.

Morawiecki, currently the deputy leader of the opposition PiS party, waived his immunity from prosecution in January of this year. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has declined to respond to questions from the prosecution. On his social media, Morawiecki stated that he feels he is being “persecuted for the will to organize the presidential elections.”

In a reflection on his actions, Morawiecki expressed, “If I had to make the decision again regarding the preparation of the elections at that time, I would do exactly the same. It was my duty. When the whole world froze because of the pandemic, I acted, for Poland. I continue to do so today. I wouldn’t change a thing.” Should he be convicted, Morawiecki may face a potential prison sentence of up to three years, and he has recently taken on the role of leader of the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists party.

In conclusion, Mateusz Morawiecki faces serious legal charges for his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic concerning the organization of a presidential election. His decision to bypass legal protocols has resulted in significant financial repercussions for the government. Despite his claims of duty to the nation, Morawiecki’s future hangs in the balance, particularly with the possibility of a prison sentence if convicted.
