The Kenya Meteorological Department has projected substantial rainfall beginning in the third week of March, expected to continue until late July. Farmers are advised to begin preparation for planting, while current weather conditions will remain hot and dry ahead of the rains.

Experts from the Kenya Meteorological Department have forecasted the arrival of rainfall in the country within the next three weeks, following current dry and sunny conditions. A meteorologist provided information to the press on Thursday, February 27, indicating that diverse regions are expected to start receiving rain in the third week of March.

The anticipated rainfall is projected to be substantial and will continue for approximately five months, running from mid-March until late July. To prepare for the upcoming planting season, the expert advised farmers to commence preparatory activities, such as land tilling, in advance of the rains.

Farmers who prefer dry planting methods have been encouraged to begin their activities during the first two weeks of March, as the onset of rainfall is expected later in the month. Additionally, the forecast suggests that rains will intensify through April before tapering off in July.

This announcement comes in response to the concerns raised by several farmers who have been frustrated by the prolonged dry weather. Due to the lack of short, sporadic rains typically experienced early in the year, some farmers have expressed hesitation about proceeding with farming activities this season.

“Every farmer is now ready for the planting season. However, the weather has been unusually severe for an extended period, and it seems there is a change in the climate this year,” remarked one concerned farmer. Simultaneously, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning for hot and dry conditions during the upcoming week.

In its recent weather advisory, Kenya Met cautioned residents to prepare for extremely high temperatures, with daytime readings likely exceeding 30°C from February 25 to March 3. Areas such as Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, South-Eastern Lowlands, and the Lake Victoria Basin can expect temperatures between 25°C and 30°C, while nighttime temperatures may fall below 10°C in some regions.

The Kenya Meteorological Department anticipates the onset of significant rainfall beginning in mid-March, lasting until late July, which is critical for farmers preparing for the planting season. Despite current dry conditions causing concern among farmers, preparations should commence ahead of the forecasted rains. Moreover, residents are advised to brace for hot weather in the meantime.
