Cyclone Disrupts Travel Plans as Mauritius Airport Closes

The Mauritius Meteorological Service issued a Class 3 cyclone warning affecting travelers between Mauritius and South Africa. Air Mauritius has closed the international airport until further notice, canceling all flights. Hundreds of tourists hoping to travel between Mauritius and South Africa are facing disruptions due to a Class 3 cyclone warning issued by the Mauritius Meteorological Service. Consequently, Air Mauritius announced the temporary closure of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on Wednesday, halting all flights until further notice.

The weather network is currently tracking six cyclones in the southern hemisphere, including Cyclone Garance, which is approximately 390 kilometers from Mauritius. Other cyclones are potentially making their way towards islands including Reunion and Madagascar, raising concerns about their impact.

Air Mauritius has indicated that all flights are canceled, but they will reschedule as soon as conditions improve. Similarly, South African Airways has suspended flights to and from Mauritius. Flight Centre has reported that 249 travelers are affected in the upcoming two weeks, and their team is ready to assist with the latest updates.

Lynette Machiri from Flight Centre stated, “Our team has the latest relevant information to assist customers.” Some hotels are helping guests who are stranded by extending their stays. Furthermore, travelers in Mauritius are advised to communicate with their travel advisers regarding rebooking options and accommodations.

Ott de Vries, CEO of the Association of Southern African Travel Agents, acknowledged the disappointment and uncertainty caused by the airport closure. He noted that Air Mauritius allows travel date changes at no extra cost until March 31. Additionally, SAA is accommodating passengers on its flights or partner airlines when possible.
