Nilam Shinde, a 35-year-old postgraduate student from Maharashtra, India, is currently in critical condition at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California, following an unfortunate accident on February 14. She sustained severe injuries after being struck by a vehicle during a routine evening walk. Although she remains in a comatose state, her family has reported slight improvements in her health, including stabilized brain and blood pressure levels.
The medical facility has urgently requested that Ms. Shinde’s father travel to the United States to aid in medical decision-making, as she is unable to communicate due to her critical injuries and the use of life support. California State University has confirmed the necessity for her father’s presence to assist the medical team in determining her treatment plan.
Ms. Shinde’s family applied for a visa on February 16; however, the application has been pending. Following media coverage, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, and local politician, Supriya Sule, reached out to the family, assuring them of support. The Indian government has also contacted the US administration to expedite her father’s visa or emergency travel permit to facilitate their presence.
Her uncle, Gaurav Sanjay Kadam, mentioned that there has been some improvement in Ms. Shinde’s condition. “Her brain pressure has reduced since yesterday and is normal now. Her blood pressure has also increased and is maintained at a normal rate, but she is still in a coma,” he reported. The family is hoping for Mr. Tanaji Shinde, Ms. Shinde’s father, along with Mr. Kadam, to obtain visas quickly for travel to the US.
Mr. Kadam poignantly noted that Ms. Shinde lost her mother to a brain tumor a year prior, highlighting the family’s challenging circumstances. The urgent need for her father to make critical decisions regarding his daughter’s care compounds the situation, given his elderly age and her worsening condition.
