NiDCOM Calls for Thorough Investigation into Suspicious Death of Nigerian Player Abubakar Lawal

Abubakar Lawal, a former Nigerian football player, died under suspicious circumstances in Uganda. NiDCOM, led by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, is demanding a thorough investigation amidst inconsistent reports surrounding his death. Lawal fell from a shopping mall balcony, leading to urgent medical care, but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed concern over the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Abubakar Lawal, a former Nigerian junior international and player for Vipers SC in Uganda. NiDCOM intends to call for a comprehensive investigation into this tragic event. The football club and Ugandan authorities announced Lawal’s death, initially attributing it to a motorcycle accident, but later reports indicate he fell from a mall balcony in Kampala, Uganda’s capital.
According to preliminary reports from Ugandan police, Lawal had driven to the shopping mall in a vehicle registered under UBQ 695G to meet his friend, Tanzanian national Omary Naima. Naima stated that she had left Lawal in her hotel room while he was preparing tea, only to find out shortly after that he had fallen from the balcony, leading to his emergency transport to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Amidst rising calls for justice from the Nigerian community, including responses from Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that NiDCOM is actively engaging with relevant authorities. She highlighted the inconsistencies in the reports surrounding Lawal’s demise as alarming and called for the Nigerian Government and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to cooperate with Uganda to investigate this incident thoroughly.
The Nigerian Embassy in Uganda has reportedly been involved immediately after learning of the incident. Ambassador Shama Shanga has been in touch with local authorities to demand a thorough examination of the circumstances leading to Lawal’s death, stating the need for complete transparency to find justice for the deceased athlete. “This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover-up at all. This is so sad,” she conveyed in her message to Musa on X.
The death of Abubakar Lawal has raised critical concerns, prompting calls for a detailed investigation from NiDCOM and Nigerian football authorities. The circumstances surrounding his demise appear inconsistent, leading to assertions of suspicion. NiDCOM, in coordination with the Nigerian Embassy, is determined to ensure a transparent inquiry, advocating for justice for Lawal and condolences for his bereaved family.
