Mazda 6e Set to Launch in Thailand in 2025 Amid EV Expansion
Mazda will launch the Mazda 6e in Thailand in 2025 as part of its EV expansion in Southeast Asia. The vehicle, known as the Mazda EZ-6 in China, debuted at the Brussels Motor Show. Mazda is investing considerably in its Thai manufacturing base and plans to introduce multiple electrified models amid rising EV demand.
Mazda has announced the upcoming launch of the Mazda 6e in Thailand in 2025, a significant step in its expansion within Southeast Asia’s electric vehicle (EV) market. This model, referred to as the Mazda EZ-6 in China, made its debut at the Brussels Motor Show on January 10 and is set for a European launch later this year.
The demand for electric vehicles has been rapidly growing in Thailand, a critical automotive production hub in Southeast Asia, where Mazda has maintained operations since 1955. To cater to this rising interest, the Mazda 6e is introduced as part of Mazda’s broader EV strategy in the region.
Officially launched in China on October 26, 2024, the Mazda EZ-6 achieved impressive sales figures, recording 2,445 units sold in November. This model ranks among the top three mid-size new energy sedans, benefiting from Changan’s EPA hybrid platform and offering options such as battery electric (BEV) and extended-range electric (EREV) versions across seven different configurations.
The Mazda EZ-6’s pricing in China ranges from 139,800 to 179,800 yuan ($19,300 to $24,800), featuring a 190 kW motor with a range of 480 km or 600 km for the BEV version, while the EREV version combines a 1.5L engine with a 160 kW motor, allowing for an impressive range of up to 1,301 km. Highlights include a 14.6-inch touchscreen, AR-HUD, Sony audio system, and innovative zero-gravity seats.
In conjunction with these releases, Mazda Thailand is investing 5 billion Thai baht (approximately $148.37 million) to enhance its manufacturing capabilities in Thailand. This facility will have an annual production capacity of 100,000 units, primarily focused on compact SUVs for both export and domestic sales, with plans to launch five electrified models, including the Mazda 6e, between 2025 and 2027, produced in partnership with Changan Automobile.
Despite these positive advancements, Mazda is grappling with challenges in the Chinese market, evidenced by a 28.28% year-over-year sales decline in January 2025, totaling 6,604 vehicles sold. This downturn continues a trend of declining sales over nine months, prompting Changan Mazda to accelerate its pivot towards electric vehicles, exemplified by the dual BEV and EREV options offered by the Mazda EZ-6.
Mazda’s introduction of the Mazda 6e in Thailand marks a strategic commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup in Southeast Asia amidst increasing market demand. With significant investments in manufacturing and innovative product offerings, Mazda aims to strengthen its position in the region. However, challenges in the Chinese market highlight the need for adaptive strategies as the company strives to enhance its competitiveness in the broader automotive landscape.
