A tropical cyclone alert has been issued for Western Australia as a system known as 18U is expected to evolve into cyclone Zelia, bringing heavy rains and strong winds. Meanwhile, Canada is experiencing extreme cold with temperatures plummeting below average, and northern Europe is bracing for a cold snap due to incoming polar air.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a tropical cyclone alert for the northern coast of Western Australia, concerning a tropical low identified as 18U. Situated near the Kimberley coast, this system is expected to impact northern Australia beginning Sunday night with strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surges. Flood warnings have also been issued as 18U progresses southwest along the warm waters off Western Australia next week, potentially intensifying into a tropical cyclone named Zelia. Forecasts indicate that Zelia may reach the Pilbara region by week’s end, delivering 150mm-250mm (5.9in-9.8in) of rain and wind gusts of around 100mph.

In Canada, a severe cold spell has emerged due to polar air originating from the north, plunging temperatures 5C-10C (41F-50F) below seasonal norms. Western regions such as Calgary, Edmonton, and Saskatoon face daytime highs between -10C and -15C this week, with overnight lows often dropping to -20C to -30C. There is a possibility of temperatures falling as low as -35C, which is significantly below the seasonal averages—Saskatoon reportedly lies at a latitude comparable to Cambridge in the UK, where the record low temperature stands at -13C.

European regions are also preparing for a cold snap, anticipated to begin gradually across northern Europe and intensifying into the following week. The temperature is projected to decrease between 2C to 5C below average in much of northern Europe, with parts of Scandinavia enduring a drop of 5C to 10C below average. This cooling trend is attributed to a prominent area of high pressure anticipated to develop over eastern Europe, allowing for the introduction of a colder polar continental air mass across the region. Nevertheless, there remains some uncertainty regarding the magnitude and severity of this upcoming cold spell.

In summary, the article outlines significant weather developments, including the tropical cyclone alert for Zelia in Western Australia, the harsh cold spell affecting Canada, and an impending cold snap across Europe. These weather events underscore the diverse climatic challenges currently impacting different regions around the globe.
