UDA Leaders Engage with Uganda’s NRM to Enhance Political Relations
Kenya’s UDA delegation began a six-day visit to Uganda to strengthen ties with the NRM. Key discussions with President Museveni are planned to share governance strategies. This collaboration aims to enhance political relations and improve citizens’ lives, despite ongoing controversies in Kenya related to political term extensions.
On February 4, 2024, a delegation from Kenya’s ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) commenced a six-day official visit to Uganda. The purpose of this visit is to strengthen political ties with Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Both parties aim to exchange political strategies and improve governance approaches through this engagement. Upon their arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by Major Awich Pollar, NRM’s Director of External Affairs, who emphasized the positive potential of this collaboration.
During their visit, the UDA leaders are expected to have discussions with President Yoweri Museveni, who will share insights into the NRM’s historical developments and ideological principles. Pollar believes that both UDA and NRM, being ruling political entities, have many valuable experiences and best practices to share for mutual benefit. He reiterated the importance of cooperation within the East African Community, encouraging both parties to capitalize on their strengths for improved governance.
The growing relationship between UDA and NRM is evident as they share a common vision focused on enhancing citizens’ lives and advocating for a political federation in East Africa. This visit follows a previous discussion in October 2024, where UDA representatives praised the resilience and structure of the NRM. Joash Maangi, a participant from that meeting, expressed the necessity for well-defined political collaborations considering Kenya’s complex political landscape.
UDA Secretary General, Hassan Omar, commended the leadership of NRM, describing it as a leading example in African political dynamics. However, UDA’s involvement with NRM has generated controversy in Kenya, notably related to recent proposals suggesting an extension of President William Ruto’s term from five to seven years, which has garnered mixed reactions from the public and political circles. Despite these domestic tensions, UDA continues to prioritize international diplomatic engagements, as evidenced by recent interactions with the Communist Party of China.
