In response to alarming reports of Hong Kong residents being lured into Southeast Asia for illicit work, the Security Bureau has announced the dispatch of a task force to Thailand. Since the second quarter of 2024, officials have documented 28 cases of local residents expressing being trapped, and while 16 have successfully returned, the remaining 12 have reported movement restrictions yet remain in communication with their families and the task force.
The decision to form a task force follows increasing concerns over the safety of Hong Kong citizens traveling to or residing in Southeast Asian nations. Many have fallen prey to fraudulent employment offers that lead to human trafficking and illegal activities.
