Jorge Carillo, Ecuador’s Secretary for Risk Management, described the occurrence as an extraordinary event, warning of potential reoccurrences in the forthcoming months. Meanwhile, Enrique Varea, head of the Peruvian Naval Oceanographic Department, indicated that although the serious wave conditions are expected to continue, a decrease in intensity may be seen by Monday, with hopes for normalization by early January.
In Peru, all coastal ports have been shuttered, compounding difficulties for fishermen. Approximately 31 fishermen were rescued from precarious situations, although around 180 remain at sea amidst these hazards. With jetties and public squares inundated, officials ordered the closure of numerous beaches to ensure public safety and discourage unnecessary risks.
Roberto Carrillo Zavala, the Mayor of La Cruz district, emphasized the severe financial impact on the fishing sector during damage assessments alongside Defense Minister Walter Astudillo Chavez. This marine phenomenon originated on Christmas Day and is expected to last at least until January 1, prompting national emergency responses from the operations center in Peru.
