During my recent campaign for New Hampshire state representative, I posed the question, “What topics are important to you in this election season?” numerous times. One memorable interaction was with an elderly gentleman from Charlestown, who articulated his struggles poignantly. He recounted his life with his late wife, the challenges he faces maintaining their family home, and the suffocating burden of increasing property taxes living on a fixed income.

Throughout the past five months, I knocked on approximately 1,500 doors, engaging in a campaign effort that fostered intimate conversations absent from larger community meetings. Although the majority of residents were not home or uninterested in dialogue, a small percentage opened up, sharing their personal narratives and concerns. It was a privilege to listen and connect, offering only my attention, campaign insights, and the possibility of legislative assistance if elected to office.

Despite not winning the election after extensive efforts in Charlestown, Newport, Unity, Cornish, and Plainfield, I learned valuable lessons about resilience and hardship from the community. These personal encounters illustrated the invisible struggles that many endure, which are often masked by social media portrayals of life.

Additionally, my experience shopping in person due to a malfunctioning grocery app reminded me of the importance of real-world connections. Encountering friends at the store provided an opportunity to share my personal challenges, including my election defeat and my husband’s job search—an experience far richer than typical online interactions.

The gentleman’s story was unexpectedly interrupted by his son, highlighting the intergenerational interactions within families. I left them with my undivided gratitude, wishing I had expressed how impactful these shared experiences are—reinforcing my driving motivation to engage with others and foster meaningful connections in our community.
