Reflections on Election Results: A Personal Response to Fear and Hope

The aftermath of the recent election has elicited strong emotions for the author, who reflects on how the results impact her identity as a mixed woman, a Black woman, and the daughter of an immigrant. Concerns over racism, bodily autonomy, and the portrayal of immigrants serve as a backdrop to her plea for dialogue on social justice and inclusivity in leadership. The article highlights a personal journey intertwined with broader societal issues and calls for collective action against injustices.

On the morning of November 6, I awoke with an overwhelming sense of dread and confusion, mirrored in the texts from my parents offering no reassuring words. The results of this election tapped into a myriad of emotions localized within my intersecting identities. As a mixed-race woman, I grapple with the apprehension that racism will become even more blatant in the absence of accountability. With the election of an individual who has a history of discriminatory rhetoric, the safety of marginalized communities, including myself, feels greatly diminished. Being a woman, I am acutely aware of my bodily autonomy, especially given recent discussions surrounding reproductive rights. The fact that these rights were at stake in this election further emphasizes the threatening regression our society is experiencing. As a Black woman, the alarming maternal mortality statistics within my community underscore the urgency of this issue, exacerbated by neglect toward women’s health. As the daughter of an immigrant, I feel compelled to reflect on the derogatory language employed by political leadership toward immigrants. These descriptions starkly contrast with my familial narrative, highlighting the valor and perseverance exhibited by my grandmother and mother. While those in power perpetuate xenophobic sentiments, my family’s journey encapsulates hope and determination in pursuing the American dream. As a Black woman aspiring to enter politics and law, I have witnessed a troubling dismissal of qualified candidates who embody diversity. Despite my own critical view of Kamala Harris’s policies, her campaign sparked a sense of hope for many Black women, suggesting a potential shift toward inclusiveness in leadership. Unfortunately, the subsequent election results have only deepened feelings of distrust and disappointment. I urge others to engage in difficult conversations about the implications of this election, to share experiences of hurt and fear that resonate deeply in their communities. It is crucial to acknowledge the ongoing struggle for rights that are continually threatened, reminding those with privilege to leverage their voices for those in need. This fight necessitates vulnerability and discomfort; however, it is essential for achieving justice and ensuring future inclusivity.

The article discusses the author’s deeply personal responses to the aftermath of a politically charged election, highlighting the emotional and societal impact on diverse identities. It addresses systemic issues pertaining to race, gender, and immigration and reflects on the author’s fears for the future of marginalized communities in the wake of political rhetoric that promotes division. The piece serves as both an expression of individual trauma and a call to action for collective acknowledgment of and responsibility toward ongoing struggles for justice and equity.

The election results have instigated a profound sense of fear and confusion within me, particularly as they relate to my identities as a Black and Guatemalan woman, and as an advocate for social justice. This moment demands uncomfortable conversations and reflection on the privileges held by some over marginalized communities. As I navigate this troubling landscape, I remain resolute in my pursuit of advocacy and justice, hoping for a future where voices like mine are sought after and valued.
